The challenges of January 2010

It’s 23 January 2010 – which means it’s a month since Christmas. January
has certainly been a challenge for many with the large amounts of snow seen
over much of Britain. Once again the question was asked why is the UK so
useless at dealing with snow? Other countries seem to cope much better.
The answer of course is we are just not used to it.

I was talking to someone a few days ago about what other countries do. In
Austria for example, they scoop it up into the back of a truck and deposit
it in a convenient location outside the main areas of population. Once the
snow is gone, they put the grit down, rather than trying to melt the snow
with the grit in the first place.

No doubt we will get more bad weather in the coming weeks. We can only hope
that maybe we’ll cope with it a bit better next time around!
